Task 2 Argumentative writing (International travel)

Writing task 2 (an essay)
International travel influences individuals as well as the countries they visit. Do advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
-----------

Nowadays, traveling internationally becomes more popular in the world. This kind of travel influences not only the countries but also individuals. From my points of view, there are more advantages than disadvantages . The reasons are presented as follow.

First of all, one of the positive effects on international travel is the growth of the economics of a country. As tourists do shopping, eating, enjoying entertainments provided by the country, they will spend money wherever they to. Therefore, different kinds of shops, restaurants, and hotels will generate the income from the tourists. Tourist-related activities will push the economics rate to a higher level.

Moreover, in order to serve the tourists around the world, the government needs to improve the basic facilities of the transportation ; for example, the airport, sea ports, the railway stations, etc. This improvement is beneficial to the tourists, they can come and leave the country more conveniently.

Last but not least, international travel also influences individuals. The tourists travel to and from different countries, they can enrich their knowledge and understand more about the other countries, such as the history, culture, and the development of the place. If the tourists are interested in traveling , they are more willing to visit again. This can also affect the economics of the country.

Based on the above discussion, it is clear to show the positive effects on international travel in terms of the growth of economics, the improvement of the basic transport facilities of a country and the enrichment of individuals’ knowledge.

In conclusion, in Thailand, Spain and Mexico, there is the decreasing trend in the birth rate whereas India shows the increasing trend. On the whole, we can see that the total number of children born in 1970 is more that in 2000.

Globalization

Globalization affects the world's economies both positively and negatively. Discuss the issue of globalization. Give your opinions.

Nowadays, everyone is talking about the globalization, this topic becomes a hot issue in the world. I believe that globalization does not only affect our life but also influence the world’s economy, particularly the development of a country. The reasons are presented as follow.

First of all, one of the positive effects of globalization is the expansion of the trade markets in many countries. Since goods can be sold in different areas, the qualities of the goods need to be controlled. Thus consumers can buy the same goods with same qualities. Moreover, the price of the goods may become lower and acceptable because of the mass production.

Secondly, because of the bigger market, more companies will establish more factories around the world to produce the goods. Therefore, globalization is beneficial to the labour market, especially in the developing countries, unemployed people can get their jobs back. The problem of unemployment in those countries can be solved.

Last but not least, business activities among different countries become busier, the import and export rate will rise as usual. In order to encourage the trading activities, the government should impose some new policies or revise the existence ones. Consequently, the companies have intention to invest, and more capital will be flown to the countries.

Chart Description - Global Water Use

The line graph shows the upward trend of the worldwide water use from 1900 to 2000. The second table indicates the water usages of Brazil and Congo in 2000.

According to the line graph, the agriculture sector consumed about 500 km3 water in 1900. The figure of this sector went up gradually until 2000, and reached the peak of 3000 km3. Compared with the industrial and domestic sectors, these two sectors used less water. Starting from 1900, the industrial sector used about 20 km3 water while the domestic sector used only 10km3. Although the water used in these two sectors increased steadily, the industrial sector consumed only about one-third of water consumed by the agriculture sector. Besides, the domestic sector only consumed a quarter of water used by the industrial sector.

In 2000, an average person in Brazil consumed 359m3 of water while the individual in Congo only consumed 8m3. This is because the population of Brazil was about 35 times of Congo, they spent much more water. Moreover, the area of the irrigated land of Congo was 265 times less than Brazil, therefore Congo used less water for irrigation purpose.

In conclusion, the uptrend of water consumption decreases from 3000 consumed by agriculture sector to about 400 km3 by domestic use in Year 2000. Also it is found that the consumption of water depends on the number of population, the more population there is in the country, the more water people will consume.

Personality Development

Our characteristics can influence our personality and development. Although personality can be unique in terms of one's outlook, height, and complexion; these unique factors can in turn affect our development. From my points of view, I agree with the statement and my opinions are presented as follows.

First of all, our characteristics can be inherited from our parents, we cannot change them easily. For instance, the appearance, the height, and the colour of skin are from our parents. If we are born with a lovely face, everyone will accept us easily. Moreover, some pretty women and handsome men can win friendship and admiration of others because of their beautiful faces. This becomes beneficial for them to build their social networks and connections .

In addition, the other factor can influence our personality and development is our height. Those people who are short may have low self-esteem. They may think other people would laugh at them, they may not have confidence in themselves. Besides, some occupations require the applicants to have certain height. If they are shorter than the required height , they will not succeed in applying the job.

Furthermore, some people are proud of their colour of skin, this usually happens in the Western countries. The White seem to have more authorities and benefits than the Black, even their social status is not the same. To deal with these problems, the Black should pay much more effort and overcome their weakness, just like Obama, the President of USA.

Based on the above discussions, it is obvious that our characteristics can definitely influence our personality and development. I believe that our characteristics will also affect the future of individual's development. However, we can always change our destiny by making effort to let people know our strengths.

Map Description

The map illustrates the location of two possible sites: S1 and S2 for building a new supermarket in Garlsdon town with an overall population of 65000.

According to the map, Site 1 (S1) is far away from the town center of Garlsdon, it is located at the west-east of the town. This site holds 10,000 people of Hindon town. However, it is not easy for them to get there since the main roads and the railway are not near the site. Although they can drive or take trains to S1, they still need to walk to the supermarket.

On the other hand, the location of Site2 (S2) is in the center of the Garlsdon town, it is surrounded by the nearby residential areas. The residents can go to this site more easily and the place is more convenient for shopping. Moreover, this serves not only the people in Garlsdon town, but also the two towns: Bransdon and Cransdon towns. It serves about 110000 people in these three towns and the workers in the industrial areas. Furthermore, S2 is near the raillines and the main roads, people can reach there more conveniently.

In conclusion, the location of the supermarket at S2 is better than S1 due to its much more convenient location and greater number nearby population.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Watching TV

Children today spend more time watching TV than they did in the past. Describe some of the advantages and disadvantages of watching TV.

------------

A coin has two sides, it has own advantages and disadvantages. Some people say that watching TV is harmful to our children, but I do not agree with this statement. From my points of view, I believe that watching TV is beneficial to our children. My opinions are presented as follow.

First of all, television can be an educational media to us. Through watching various educational TV programmes, our kids can receive more information about the world. Moreover, the images are impressive to the kids, so that they can memorize the information more firmly in their mind.

On the other hand, good television programmes can also serve as a kind of good entertainment to the children; especially to the families which are not rich enough to afford the fees of the extra-curricular activities. Therefore, this is a good way for the children to spend their leisure time.

Of course, the above reasons are the positive effects on the children. However, I must admit that children spend more time on watching TV will affect them to do less outdoor activities. TV programmes can be addictive to some children. It is not easy to make sure that most of the TV programmes are suitable for children.

Obviously there are both positive and negative effects on children spending time watching TV. To help children choose to watch good TV programmes, parents should play an important role to guide and give advice to their children.

The Trend of Using Machines

"With the help of science and technology, machines are becoming more popular in workplace. Do you think the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages? Discuss both ideas and give your own opinion"

------------

Along with the rapid development of the science and technology, different kinds of machines are used to replace manual work in the workplace. From my points of view, the use of machines can be more advantageous to our daily life than disadvantageous. The reasons are presented in the following paragraphs.

First of all, different kinds of machines can function differently in the workplace. We use the machines in order to save time, they can speed up the process of the ordinary work. Therefore, we have more spare time to do other things. The washing machine is a good example to illustrate this point, when we use the washing machine to do the cleaning job for us, we can also do the other work at the same time.

In addition, the application of machines can improve our quality of life. With the help of the machines, our works become more convenient and efficient. Once we set the programme of the machines, after pressing the certain buttons, then the machines will run automatically.

However, most of the machines are the electrical appliances, they need electricity. Once there is a shortage or suspension of electricity, the machines can no longer be operated. When this happens, it will definitely affect our daily life, machines will temporarily stop until the electricity supply becomes available again.

Based on the above discussion, machines play a very important role in our life and we cannot live without them. Although machines can make our life more comfortable, efficient and convenient, they will also cause some negative effects on us.

Underground Railway Systems in Six Cities

The table provides the information regarding the opening dates, the length of the routes and the number of passengers served per year by the underground railway systems in six different cities.

The oldest and the longest underground railway is found in London. It has opened since 1863 and the total length of the route is 394 kilometers. Although the London railway holds these two greatest records among the six cities, the number of passengers was only 775 millions, which ranks the third among the six cities.

However, the youngest and the shortest route goes with Kyoto. It's service starts in 1981. The length of the route is only 11 kilometers and it serves only 45 million passengers per year as the least amount served among the cities.

The biggest number of passengers is found in Tokyo railway system, it carries 1927 millions of people per year. The newest underground railway system is found in Los Angeles, it operated in 2001. Since it is the newest railway, the length of its route is 14 times less than the London's, and the number of passengers is only one-fifteen of the London railway, too.

In conclusion, the London and Kyoto underground railway systems vary sharply in terms of length of route and the number of passagers. Tokyo railway system serves the most passengers among the six cities.

Financial Need After Retirement (3)

Financial Need After Retirement (Revised 3)

As the society develops the way it does today, people become more concerned for saving sufficient money to survive after their retirement. However, some people think that saving money is individuals’ responsibilities while the others hold the opposite opinions. From my point of view, I agree that individual should be responsible for their own retirement life.

First of all, one's future life cannot be planned by others. Individuals should be accountable for their own future. If we want to maintain a better living standard after our retirement, we must do something for ourselves. This means we should start saving money once we have a job, so that we can eliminate the financial problems after retirement.

In addition, saving money is a good habit, therefore we should encourage money saving from our childhood. This is a way to get a life security. With saving, we can ensure that we have some spare money to spend if we encounter some unpredictable situations, or come to a retirement age.

On the other hand, although the government have imposed some retirement policies regarding individuals' financial arrangement after retirement, this should not be a sole responsibility of the government.

It is impossible for the government to cater for all the citizens' financial needs. Also it is not fair for the government to save money for every citizens as there are other financial needs in the society. It is too selfish to focus on the life of the old and disregard the young.

So, based on the above the discussions, we can see that saving money for our future and after retirement should be more of the individuals’ responsibility.

Environment Protection (2)

Along with the rapid development of the society, environmental protection has become an important issue of the world. Some people say that the government should play an important role on this issue, but I would hold the opposite opinion. This is because we are all responsible for protecting our environment. The reasons are presented below.

First of all, we all live in the earth which is our home. As a member of the world, we have to do something to protect our home rather than to rely on the policy of the government. As a responsible citizen, environmental protection should be our duty. . If the environment becomes better, it help create a better life and better future for us.

In addition, according to the research findings household wastes are the main sources of environmental pollution. As wastes are made by families and individuals, we should have responsibility to reduce the production of such wastes. If we move a small step, we will help improve our environment a vast step.

Finally, the natural resources are limited and valuable, they will run out in a near future. If we use the resources without making any wise decision or we only want to fulfill our needs , we will not leave the useful resources to our next generations. That means the sustainability could not be continued.

Based on the above discussion, we can see that the individuals play more important role on the protection of the environment.

Development of Technology (3)

As a coin has two sides, there are both advantages and disadvantages for us in regard to the rapid development of technology. From my point of view, technology advancement is bringing us more advantages in our daily life than disadvantages. My arguments are stated as follows.

First of all, technology can bring convenience to us and saves our time. For example, we only need to sit in front of the computers and press a few buttons, we will know what happen in the world and get the most updated information displayed on the small screens. This is because we can search for information we need in a few seconds via the internet.

Secondly, technology can help not only shorten the distance between people but also make the connection much easier for us. Since there are different kinds of communication tools available on the internet: MSN, face book, email and SMS. These tools are easy to use we can use them whenever and wherever we like. This helps to draw us closer with our friends.

Last but not least, technology makes works of our daily life more efficient. We spend less time to complete complicated tasks. For instance, with the help of the electrical appliances at home, family members could cut down time for cleaning and doing the household tasks, such as preparing food, and washing clothes.

In conclusion, I do not agree to the statement that technology development has a negative impact on us. On the contrary, technology can help improve our life a lot.

Starting from April, the enrolled students dropped to 100. But the number of students joined in May increased steadily, and there was no obvious change during June and July.

After July, the graph shows that the enrollment of students decreased dramatically from 130 to around 80. From September until the end of the year, there was a steady rise in student numbers to a peak of 180 in December.

Argumentative essay on online activities

Nowadays, online activities become very popular among teenagers. However, these activities can unfavorably affect the youngsters’ social skills, language skills and the relationships with their families.

First, youngsters spend a lot of time expressing their thoughts on their blogs, MSN or face book. Although they can considered as good ways to share ideas with people, they provide less chance to develop actual social skills. Since this kind of communication requires no face-to-face interaction, the youngsters may not be able to manage how to communicate with people in a real situation.

Moreover, the language used in the internet world is too casual, such as some short form of words, symbols as well as the new terms created by individual users. If the youngsters always use such language, their language ability must be affected. In other words, they cannot express themselves clearly with some formal or accurate wordings, sometimes they don’t even know how to spell and write correctly.
In addition, the youngsters enjoy spending too much time browsing the internet. They have less time to communicate with their families, and the relationships will be influenced. For example, some youngsters spend less time on their studies because of the online activities, they will be blamed by their parents. Eventually, their relationship may be broken easily

Comprehension Task

I don’t think the government should stop the H1N1 vaccination. From my point of view, the Guilain-Barre syndrome associated with the vaccine was only a single case in Hong Kong. This doesn’t mean the vaccination is generally harmful. Moreover, a person who receives any vaccine is taking the risk of getting some side-effects. On the other hand, it is more beneficial to the high-risk group to receive the vaccine since they may be affect by the flu virus easily and may cause a more serious consequence than the potential side-effect.
