The two tables show the average scores of the candidates who participated in the 2008’s IELTS. The highlighted figures indicate the overall results of Hong Kong candidates in both Academic and General Training papers.

The mean score of the listening test of the Hong Kong candidates of Academic stream was 6.65, it was a little bit higher than the candidates of the General Training. Moreover, the average score of the reading test achieved by the candidates of Academic stream was about 0.5 marks higher than those of the General Training. This reflects the candidates of the Academic stream got a better overall result.

On the other hand, the performance of the candidates shows better results in Academic stream than in General Training. The figures also show the lower mean scores in the two areas: writing and speaking tests. They got the scores of below 6 in both tests.

For the overall result, candidates of the Academic stream performed better than those of the General Training. The score of the Academic stream was 6.31 and the one of the General Training was only 6.19.

In conclusion, Hong Kong candidates of Academic stream do better than those of the General Training in the IELTS tests. And the English standard of Hong Kong is acceptable, since the level of difficulty of Academic is greater than General Training.
